Free SkypeOut (calls to landline and cell) till end of year

Thought you all might be interested in this. Free outgoing VOIP calls to us landline and cell phones.

http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/74434

Put this together with the free AOL or Lycos incoming phone and you're all set :-)

I tried this on my wildblue (With Linux) and it worked immeidately. Latency didn't seem too bad - kind of like a cell phone, only used 3-6Kb up/down. What do you all think? Not bad for free for a bit.

Lol yah I posted this in the Off-Topic forum earlier as well. I tried skype and my impression was WOW. I honestly do not think that the sound quality is going to get any better than that. The latency was very bareable and I was able to carry on a good conversation. So I would recommend that everyone give the ole skype a try.

I wonder how much bandwidth this uses.

Sorry Siryak - didn't see your post in the other forum.

As for the bandwidth, it wasn't too bad - 3-6Kb/s both ways. You could talk for hours and hours and hours and wouldn't even notice a dent in your FAP (well, if you have pro I suppose)... and they have a Linux client too :-) ... and did I mention its free :-)

Cool, thanks for the inf.

I knew they had it for Linux as it comes pre-installed by default with the distro I use; Mepis (which I think is the very best Linux ever BTW).

I shall give it a try.
Again thanks.

I have been using Skype since Ive had Wildblue and it has worked great. I havent been able to call out with it now for 4 days. I keep getting the message "could not connect to skype proxy"

Is it possible Wildblue is blocking the ports for VOIP now?

Ok..well, this problem happened ever since I moved the modem to a different room. I unhooked the send and recieve cables from the modem and hooked them back up in the other room. Is it possible to get them backwards and still have service? I can upload and download, but I find it strange that I never had a problem calling out with skype until I moved the modem.

Oh, and I tried connecting to skype through the dial-up account and it connects both ways just fine. I cant get it to work throught the dish though. Im here on the dish now, so apparently things are working to send messages here.

I also did a speed test and am right where I should be..

I have had no luck getting a new user login from Skype for the past 2 days. I get to "Connected", but time-out on "Sign-In". No problem with any other web sites. Any tricks needed, like opening incoming ports on the router ?

Maybe I spoke to soon because now I can't connect to skype...Hope they get this fixed. I tried it with dial-up and it worked. Is wildblue somehow blocking skype?

One thing I think I should add is I can sign into skype no problem I just can't call out.

Edit: Ok I just tried Skype 2.0 and I can't even log on. But on the Skype Beta 2.5 I can log in. But still a no go on calling out.
