Today, I happen to converse with a Cell Tower engineer for Alltel.

In essence:

1. On towers with higher density cell traffic, they use max available freq, where in remote rural areas, just the min needed (fewer channels).

2. EVDO is using the same set of freqs.

3. Cell traffic is more important than EVDO traffic...hence, EVDO users may get bumped when cell calls increase.

Did the Alltel engineer happen to mention that most cell phone traffic is at 800MHz and most EVDO traffic is PCS at 1900MHz?

They both CAN use the same frequencies, but the great majority of the traffic of the two groups (cell phone and EVDO) does not.

A simple Google search can provide the supporting evidence.
I'm surprised the engineer didn't know that!

The engineer probably did know that.......but sometimes in the "enthusiasm" to try to prove a point by some posters on this forum.....selective memory prevails

Not too familiar with the Alltel market however, in our market Verizon has most current EVDO service located in the PCS band (where it has licenses.) All Sprint EVDO service is currently located in the PCS band as well.

EVDO uses the same frequency bands that cellular voice uses. These are the 800MHz cellular (824-896MHz), and 1900MHz PCS (1850MHz-1990MHz) bands. The specific band that you will be using is dependent upon which licenses a carrier has in your market. :)

One of the early issues with the CDMA technology was the 'shrinking footprint'. It was not until they started loading the towers with traffic that they realized this issue. Over the years since initial deployment they have done some things to help overcome this but I would imagine that the EVDO service would likely experience some of the same issues.

I am not seeing the problem here news. Ofcourse they are only going to use the frequencies they need, but that doesn't mean they wont keep enough going to keep the bandwidth flowing.

Negative:

1. Mister Gadget nailed it - "The specific band that you will be using is dependent upon which licenses a carrier has in your market"

2. I did say - "1. On towers with higher density cell traffic, they use max available freq, where in remote rural areas, just the min needed (fewer channels)."

Of course not, you are not an EVDO user...

Verizon launches EV-DO Rev A network (http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/01/verizon-launches-ev-do-rev-a-network/)

...
The locations look to be the same ones we were rumoring earlier, at least for the most part: Massachusetts, including Boston and its suburbs; Richmond and Hampton Roads, Virginia; Chicago and its suburbs; Gary Indiana; Salt Lake City along with other cities in Utah; and Florida throughout Verizon's existing broadband network. There are already websites that have been tracking Verizon's subtle spread of Rev A across the country, and it seems like Verizon, while maybe not in a position to challenge the 66 million people currently covered by Sprint's Rev A network, wanted to wait until it got dang close to launch.....

This post is irrelevant to me. Verizon does not even get with 120 miles of me. I am talking Sprint which shows me as a future coverage area.;) I wouldn't consider Verizon anyway, because I would be terminated in about 15 days.

Well I'm going into my third month with Sprint EDVO and I'm as happy as pie!
I think I'm somewhere around 5 Gigs for the month and to me that was allot. But one of the nice things, was not having to check some fool meter to see if I was close to my limit. No surprises on my bill, fast speeds anytime day or night, rain or shine, so thats that. People can say what they want about what "may happen" with this service, but the proof is in the pudding, or in my case, my EVDO USB Modem...

Words for the day - good luck, low probability, fluke, godsend, turn of the wheel of fortune, & run of luck.

Or, as Clint Eastwood said in "Dirty Harry,".

"You've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky?

Well, do ya?"
